Annual sports tournament kicks off in style

Maokane Annual Sports and Football Tournament is back, bigger and better.
The second edition will see eight football teams battle it out at Maokane playgrounds from Friday to Sunday.
The teams include defending champions Bete Sa Nkwe, Talent City, Tsunami, Future Stars, Real Stars, Atlantic Stars from Lehoko, and Street Boys from Mokhomma, each sponsored with sportswear worth P50 000 by Botswana-based WUSA Sportswear.
“We are proud to feature professional commentators like Nelson Ditibane and Ofentse ‘Bandleng’ Mokgorise, with matches officiated by Botswana Football Association (BFA)-accredited referees,” said event organiser, Othusitse Seane during an interview with BOPA.
The tournament enjoys support from sponsors such as WUSA Sportswear, KNM, Jwaneng Mine, and Baruja.
Thusi Global Works, spearheaded by Seane, also contributed P10 000 to the cause while each team committed P2 000 to participate.
The champions will take home a trophy and P7 250, while second, third, and fourth place will receive P5 250, P4 250, and P3 250, respectively.
Teams finishing fifth to eighth will receive P1 500 each.
“This event doesn’t only uplift Maokane but also Mokhomma, Samane, and Lehoko villages. It provides opportunities for small businesses to set up stalls and sell their products, while engaging the youth and keeping them off the streets,” said Seane.
His hope is to grow the tournament to include all villages around Jwaneng and Mabutsane.
