In honour and recognition of her contributions to society, Ms Direpang Segosebe, an advocate for the rights of marginalised communities, has been awarded a Doctorate in Humane Letters (DHL).
The conferment of the honorary degree at a ceremony held at Upper City Covenant Seminary and Theological Bible College (UCCSAT) University in Uganda on Saturday was an acknowledgement of her unwavering dedication to promoting education, social justice and cultural understanding.
Dr Segosebe, a retired nurse, has long been an advocate for marginalised communities, her focus being largely to raise awareness about social issues as well as push for transformative change.
In an interview with BOPA on Tuesday, Dr Segosebe said her work spanned several sectors including human rights and community development and that as a passionate leader she had consistently demonstrated a commitment to fostering a more equitable and inclusive society, making her a deserving recipient of the distinguished honour.
Among her contributions, she has worked tirelessly to improve access to education on health matters, ensuring that the next generation had the resources and opportunities necessary to lead a healthy life.
Dr Segosebe said she had collaborated with local and international organisations to bring attention to pressing issues, including identifying gaps in the health sector.
She stated that her work included identifying gaps on social services, adding that she had also visited churches to educate congregants concerning stigma related to HIV. Further, she has assisted members of some vulnerable groups to acquire national identity cards as well as helped ensure that the next generation had the resources and opportunities necessary to succeed in life.
In addition to her work, Dr Segosebe said she had been an outspoken advocate for social justice, pushing for systemic change in policies that impact marginalised and under-represented communities.
She pointed out that her commitment to equity and human rights had made her an influential voice both on a local and global scale, noting further that she got inner peace from seeing the world become a better place.
While acknowledging her supporters who contributed to her journey and underscoring the importance of collaboration in effecting positive change, Dr Segosebe pointed out that conferral of the degree was a moment of both reflection and celebration of the collective effort to build a more just and compassionate society.
She said her honour served not only as a recognition of her past achievement but also a call to action for others to follow on her footsteps in recognition of the notion that ‘true greatness lies in the service of others, and the pursuit of knowledge and justice is an ongoing journey, one that shapes the future of generations to come.’
As a newly minted recipient of the Doctorate in Humane Letters, Dr Segosebe is poised to continue her work, inspiring future generations to engage in meaningful social change. Ends
