First Lady celebrates Christmas with D'kar children

21 Dec 2024

With the festive season in full swing, children in D'kar had the opportunity to celebrate the holiday season in style with First Lady Ms Kaone Boko.

Ms Boko hosted the children to a day of fanfare on December 20, gifting them toys and snack packs in the true spirit of Christmas.

“It a season of sharing; a season in which we share material stuff, and most importantly share love,” she said.

She said it was also a time to reflect on the year that was drawing to a close as well as to wait in anticipation for the good that the coming year would be bringing.

Ghanzi Member of Parliament and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Noah Salakae thanked First Lady for visiting D’kar and creating beautiful memories for the village’s children.

On issues that had earlier been raised by Kgosi Waynard Morris of D’kar, Mr Salakae said reports of defilement being rife in the village, called for a multi-pronged approach that involved different stakeholders.

He said it was crucial to do everything possible to protect children and safeguard their future, observing that defilement and teenage pregnancy robbed children of their childhood, with the latter saddling them with adulthood responsibilities before their time.

Kgosi Morris had decried the frequent cases of defilement, and had said that more worrying was the length of time it took to address them.

Kgosi Morris also said teenage pregnancy was another problem that bedeviled D’kar.

Blaming the problem on shaky family structures and the accompanying poor child upbringing, he said victims were often out-of-school girls.

Kgosi Morris said strengthening families and helping make them safe havens for children would help reduce incidences of teenage pregnancy.

He said a family environment conducive for a positive upbringing of children would help ensure they were protected and shielded from anything that could potentially ruin their lives.

Kgosi Morris noted that currently some families protected perpetrators of crimes against children, thereby contributing to their continued occurrence. Ends
