President Advocate Duma Boko visited Sir Seretse Khama Barracks (SSKB) on Monday to gain deeper understanding of the operations and capabilities of Botswana Defence Force (BDF).
The visit, which forms part of the presidential handover, enabled the President to observe first-hand the facilities and equipment that support the BDF in maintaining peace and security within the country.
During the tour, the President was briefed on key operations and technologies employed by the BDF to execute their mandate.
In an interview, after the tour, Lt Gen. Placid Segokgo said BDF extended an invitation to the new commander-in-chief to familiarise himself with the inner workings of the military, its current challenges, and foundational role in upholding the Constitution of the country.
Lt Gen. Segokgo went on to describe the notable successes the army has achieved, particularly during its peacekeeping mission in Mozambique, which had earned international acclaim for the institution’s capabilities.
However, he shed light on pressing challenges the military faced, including inadequate accommodation for soldiers, low wages, and pensions that left much to be desired.
“The President was gracious in his response to our openness and honesty,” said the BDF commander.
Further, he said President Boko assured them that his government would support the BDF in its crucial role of ensuring good governance for the nation.
The President also pledged to prioritise the needs of the army in his administration’s agenda.
Minister for State President Mr Moeti Mhwasa and Minister for International relations Mr Phenyo Butale accompanied the President. ENDS
