Budget constraints halts Malolwane-Mmaphashalala road construction

17 Dec 2024

The construction of Malolwane-Mmaphashalala road which passes through Oliphant’s Drift, Ramotlabaki and Phala Camp has been affected by budgetary constraints.

Responding to a question in Parliament, the Assistant Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Keoagile Atamelang said the project was originally not included in the National Development Plan (NDP) 11 nor the Transitional National Development Plan (TNDP), but was approved by cabinet to be designed during the 2024/25 financial year.

Minister Atamelang said in May this year, the ministry submitted a request for funding from the Ministry of Finance through a Project Memorandum, but was not approved due to budgetary constraints. He said the road could serve as an alternative route that could augment Dibete-Mookane-Machaneng.

Mr Atamelang said the project was subject to improvement in the economy and would be considered in the NDP 12, adding the timelines for implementation stages could therefore be only known after s approval in NDP 12.

Minister Atamelang was responding to a question from Kgatleng East MP, Mr Mabuse Pule who wanted to know whether the project remained a priority for the current government as was the case with the previous government. Ends
