Officer drills councillors on DCEC mandate
16 Dec 2024
Directorate of Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) has the responsibility to investigate allegations of corruption and economic crime, educate the public on the effects of corruption and prevent corruption.
Mr Boago Koloi, an investigating officer at DCEC said this at the orientation of newly elected councillors in Serowe recently.
The DCEC is also empowered to investigate any other offence disclosed during the course of investigation, he said.
Mr Koloi further said they were also responsible for providing general legal advice, adding that they liased with the investigator on a continuous basis to ensure quality assurance in the prosecution led investigation process.
He said this entailed involvement and consultation between an investigator and a legal officer at every stage of the investigation.
He said the DCEC identified corruption opportunities in government and parastatal institutions by examining policies and procedures and recommending remedial measures.
In their comments, most councillors decried that DCEC was not empowered enough and alleged that it seemed the organisation chose who to investigate.
Some councillors also said corruption was exacerbated by distorted decision making processes and poor service delivery. Ends
