OLD SSKIA ROAD CLOSED FOR SIX MONTHS
The road leading to Sir Seretse Khama International Airport (SSKIA) from the airport circle has been closed for the next six months to pave way for the upcoming infrastructure development of the Special Economic Zone (SEZ).
The Director of Special Economic Zone Authority Mr Goabaone Masike informed the media during a press briefing on Thursday.
He noted that part of the road overlapped on the site earmarked for SEZ hence the decision to close the road.
He explained that traffic to and from the airport would be redirected to use alternative route passing through the special economic zone.
To manage this disruption, Mr Masike explained that travelers coming from the city center would navigate through the main roundabout into the SEZ, where they would make a right turn approximately 700 meters along the SEZ site and continue to reconnect with the airport road about a kilometer north.
"We have consulted with the local business community and police to ensure they are prepared for these changes,” Mr Masike remarked.
The new road, he said would be a dual carriageway, designed to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion.
In addition, the authority had installed more visible signage to guide motorists.
