BCP vows to hold govt accountable

Botswana Congress Party (BCP), the main opposition party in Parliament, has reiterated its commitment to holding the government accountable ‘without fear or favour.’
Maun East MP, Mr Goretetse Kekgonegile, made the statement on Wednesday while debating the State-of-the-Nation Address debate.
Mr Kekgonegile emphasised the BCP’s dedication to performing its oversight role and acting as an alternative voice in Parliament throughout its tenure as the leading opposition party. He revealed that the BCP has established shadow cabinet members specifically tasked with examining each ministry and preparing for the upcoming 2029 general elections.
“The shadow cabinet is one of our protocols so that when we assume power, we will hit the ground running,” asserted MP Kekgonegile, underscoring the party’s belief in organisation and meritocracy.
He noted that while the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) inherited a government burdened by financial difficulties, it had five years to shift this narrative, as the electorate would evaluate its performance based on these circumstances.
Mr Kekgonegile further criticised the UDC, stating that despite inheriting a corrupt system, the government has fallen short in demonstrating its commitment to combating corruption in its initial days.
In response, Francistown East MP also Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship, Mr Tiroeaone Ntsima, acknowledged the financial challenges facing government coffers but insisted that it would not hinder the UDC government from fulfilling its election promises.
“The government will undertake a financial forensic audit to determine how public funds were utilised by the previous administration,” Mr Ntsima stated, vowing that the audit would be conducted transparently. He added that such an audit would instill caution within the ruling party, as it could also be subject to scrutiny in the future.
Furthermore, Mr Ntsima declared government would prioritise human rights, indicating plans to review existing laws to ensure they promote and protect these rights.
He expressed hope that Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital would benefit from the anticipated refurbishing and renovation of public facilities.
On the subject of development in Francistown, Mr Ntsima emphasised the need for improvements, highlighting the necessity for a stormwater drainage system and the construction of internal roads.
He also addressed the issues of drug abuse and high unemployment among the youth, pledging that government would create opportunities for young individuals to engage in meaningful economic activities.
Regarding land purchased by the government from Tati Company, he expressed optimism about the future utilisation of the land, looking forward to community benefits. Ends
