Business entities are increasingly recognising their role in addressing and combating gender-based violence, thus making pledges to take action within their organisations and in the broader community.
During an event organised by Orange Botswana to commemorate 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Gaborone on Monday, government officials and civil society representatives pledged their support towards eradicating GBV.
Speaking after the event, Orange Botswana acting CEO, Mr Gobe Mbayi reaffirmed commitment to creating safer and more inclusive environments by combating GBV.
He said their efforts included partnership with Botswana Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Support Centre (BGBVC) with the intention to contribute to the social well-being of Batswana.
He said the partnership which started last year, developed as a staff-led clothes and toiletries donation drive, adding that the collaboration bloomed into the launch of the BGBVC Fund, a dedicated Orange Money account.
He said the fund provided a practical avenue for individuals to contribute to the cause through BGBVC.
Mr Mbayi said contributions to the fund raised by individuals and corporate entities aims to give hope and create a safer and more inclusive society.
He also called upon all to break the cycle of violence and replace it with a cycle of support, empowerment and prevention.
“This is not just about corporate responsibility; but a human responsibility,” he said, adding that together they had the power to lead a movement transcending industries and transform the nation.
Business entities among them Orange Botswana and Avani Gaborone Resort each pledged P10 000 pledged towards the fight against GBV. Ends
