09 Dec 2024

Francistown Boxing Club (FBC) collected three golds, two silvers and two bronze medals to finish as the best club during the Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) 2024 National Championships finals on Sunday.

A total of 11 clubs competed at the tournament which was held at the University of Botswana (UB) Indoor Sports Centre, with UB Boxing Club garnering three golds, one silver and one bronze medals, while Prisons Boxing Club and SSKB Boxing Club collected two golds, two silvers and one bronze medals each.

Last season’s champions Eastern Military Garrison (EMG) fared badly this time around with one gold, one silver and two bronze medals, while Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) Boxing Club came last with one silver and one bronze medals.

The northern city club, FBC claimed a men’s light middleweight (71kg) division gold medal through Shimane Kebadirile. Kebadirile defeated 1-2-5 Boxing Club boxer Shathiso Makhani 3-2 in a closely contested bout.

FBC further clinched two gold medals in the women’s category through Rhoda Monna and Keobakeng Phillip. Monna outclassed Jennifer Sechi of Police Boxing Club by 5-0 in the women’s bantamweight (52-54kg) division, while Phillip defeated SSKB’s Letlhogonolo Makoba 3-1 in the women’s lightweight (57-60kg) division.

In one of the most entertaining bouts of the finals, Prisons hard hitter Mmusi Tswiige cruised to the men’s middleweight (75kg) title through a 5-0 victory over Kethabile Machola of FBC.

Tswiige pointed after his victory that he was happy with how he performed during the national championships. He said he relied on his wealth of experience and good technique to outclass Machola.

“Performance wise I am very happy looking at the fact that I have not been training consistently recently as I was doing a Star 1 Coaching Course, which I managed to pass. I am a coach/ player now. This was my last fight in amateur boxing and I have finished on the right note. So far I am very happy,” he said.

Another thrilling bout was in the men’s welterweight (67kg) division where 1-2-5 club’s Odean Lesau and Diamond club’s Tebogo Rennie engaged in a mighty fight, Lesau eventually claiming a 3-2 victory.
