National Stadium under refurbishment
05 Dec 2024
Botswana Premier League teams will have to find an alternative venue as the National Stadium is temporary closed for the refurbishment of the race track.
The league’s chief executive officer, Bennet Mamelodi said in an interview that whilst they accept and understand the reasons behind the closure of the National Stadium, they would be severely affected as it hosted most of their bigger events.
He however said the developments would give the playing surface time to recover and regenerate, as well as go a long way in addressing the progression of the broader sporting agenda.
A press statement from the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) has indicated that the refurbishment of the athletics track at the stadium is an essential upgrade as the current track has reached the end of its operational lifespan.
The press statement said to facilitate the refurbishment, the National Stadium will be temporarily closed from December 4 until the end of March 2025.
“The facility has been officially handed over to the contractor, who is set to commence work immediately,” the release stated.
Furthermore, BNSC said it extended its gratitude to the public, stakeholders, and media for their understanding and support during this period, as these improvements aim to enhance the quality of sports infrastructure in Botswana.
Meanwhile, the track was last refurbished in 2018 as the country was to host the Region V Youth Games. Ends
