05 Dec 2024
There are no health hazards posed by the co-location of the fertilizer plant and residences in Molongwana lands in the Kgatleng District, Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Mr Ketlhalefile Motshegwa has informed Parliament.
This is according to the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the project which was carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Mr Motshegwa said, adding that there was therefore no consideration to construct a wind barrier on the southern side of the plant.
Mr Motshegwa indicated that the ministry, together with other relevant ministries like Lands and Agriculture as well as that of Environment and Tourism, would ensure continuous monitoring to enable prompt action, and should the need arise, appropriate action would be taken to ensure safety of the residents.
Member of Parliament for Kgatleng West, Dr Unity Dow had asked if the minister was aware of the health hazards posed by the co-location of the fertilizer plant and residences in Molongwana.
Dr Dow wanted to also know whether government would consider measures such as constructing a wind barrier on the southern side of the plant and negotiating with the residents, with a view to relocate them to the northern side of the plant, considering the undeniable value to the economy of the plant.
