No plans to construct a toll-gate at Tlokweng Border Post and Dibete Quarantine Gate.
Responding to a parliamentary question on Monday, Assistant Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Mr Keoagile Atamelang said the ministry had intentions to construct toll-gates in any suitable location on the country’s national road network including at Dibete Quarantine Gate if found suitable.
He however, highlighted that this would be subject to recommendations from a Feasibility Study on Tolling of Roads in Botswana which would be conducted during NDP12.
Mr Atamelang said the 12th Parliament passed legislation on tolling, which empowered the minister responsible to declare any road in Botswana a toll road for possible introduction of tolling.
Furthermore, Mr Atamelang told Parliament that tolling as a means of funding road maintenance, was just one of the many road user charging instruments available such as fuel levies, licence fees and transit fees among others.
He also noted that currently the ministry used the permit system whereby all foreign registered vehicles paid road user charges as and when they entered Botswana at any point of entry.
Tlokweng MP, Mr Phenyo Segokgo had wanted to know if there were plans to construct a toll-gate at the Tlokweng Border Post and Dibete Quarantine Gate to raise revenue for the country. Ends
