Government recognises HIVAIDS champions

02 Dec 2024

Government recognises the role of HIV/AIDS champions in the ongoing battle against the disease.

Assistant Minister of State President, Ms Maipelo Mophuting, said this during an appreciation dinner for the champions on Saturday.

Ms  Mophuting expressed gratitude for the champions who stepped up during a time when Botswana was severely affected by the disease.

“It is gratifying that the HIV/AIDS champions instilled hope and took action to fight against stigma and discrimination associated with the virus,” she said.

Encouraging those diagnosed with HIV, Ms Mophuting urged them to embrace life with positivity.

“Champions ensure that no one is left behind in the quest for better health and dignity for all as a nation,” she added.

The Assistant Minister highlighted the significant contributions made by these champions, which have led to the establishment of various support groups for individuals with HIV and AIDS across different districts and villages throughout Botswana. She stated that these support groups serve as vital pillars for those living with HIV.

Recognising the challenges faced by champions in their fight, Ms Mophuting acknowledged the difficulties that some have encountered, including rejection from families and communities.

“Your courage and strength are indeed an inspiration to all of us,” she said.

Botswana has garnered international recognition for its success in nearly eliminating the transmission of HIV from mother to child and surpassing the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets, achievements partially attributed to the champions’ efforts.

The Assistant Minister pledged continued government support for these champions through partnerships with entities such as the National AIDS and Health Promotion Agency (NAHPA) and civil society organisations. She emphasized the commitment to work towards an HIV-free generation by 2030.

The boldness and fortitude with which you act are essential for shifting mindsets around the issues and challenges faced in our lives,” she said.

Also addressing the gathering was Mr David Ngele, one of the first individuals to publicly disclose his HIV status.

He pointed out the alarming rate of new infections in Mahalapye district and expressed a collective desire to change the narrative.

“Living with HIV is a challenge, yet we stand by those who find it difficult,” he stated. Ends
