Minister clarifies sporting codes categorisation

26 Nov 2024

Minister of Sports and Arts Mr Jacob Kelebeng clarified that the recent categorisation of sporting codes into tiers was not influenced by favouritism, but was based on several factors, including potential job creation, popular support, and societal impact.

Mr Kelebeng announced that a bill will soon be presented to Parliament aimed at reviewing the incentives policy for various sporting codes, with a push to also incorporate the arts within this framework.

Addressing pressing issues, Mr Kelebeng emphasised that revitalising school sports was a top priority for his ministry. However, he cautioned that initial assessments indicate the process might  be lengthy due to the need for extensive consultations across multiple ministries.

“As we work towards this goal, the ministry will leverage the Matlhagola Tsela initiative, which has already allocated budget for compensating volunteer teachers,” Mr Kelebeng stated.

He expressed concern over the current state of schools designated as centers of excellence that are now underutilised.

“We will visit these areas along with other sporting infrastructures nationwide to explore opportunities for their revitalisation,” he noted.

In response to a call for the government to explore the potential of sports betting, the minister revealed plans to present the concept to the private sector to discuss its implementation.

Mr Kelebeng’s remarks came after several legislators contributed to a congratulatory statement regarding the senior men’s national football team’s, the Zebras, qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Mr Goretetse Kekgonegile, Member of Parliament for Maun East, raised concerns about the ministry’s progress in implementing sport in schools.

He also inquired about the potential renaming of Maun Sports Complex to Amantle Montsho Sports Complex, a suggestion made by local residents.

Thamaga/Kumakwane MP Palelo Motaosane criticised the perceived preferential treatment given to certain sports, highlighting volleyball’s historical success yet lacked recognition.

“We urge the government to provide equal support to sports and the arts,” he said.

Mr Motlhaleemang Moalosi, MP for Nkange, expressed dissatisfaction with the incomplete Isaac Makwala Stadium in Tutume, emphasising the area’s need for such infrastructure to nurture talent.

He also pointed out that some sporting codes, including motorsport, lacked adequate support.

Additionally, Tlokweng legislator Phenyo Segokgo called on the minister to embrace sports betting, identifying it as a potentially lucrative industry.

He proposed that the proceeds from sports betting could be used to enhance facilities in schools. ENDS
