Mandunyane Primary School pupil drowns

20 Nov 2024

A 13-year-old girl from Mandunyane near Tonota drowned at a pond near Shashe Dam on Monday.

Tonota Police station commander Superintendent Moore Motsokono confirmed the incident in an interview, saying the deceased was with three friends who had visited from Palapye, who had asked her to show them the dam.

He said the deceased then stopped at a pond to drink water where she slipped and fell in the pond.

He said while the others tried to rescue her, they failed and reported the incident to the parents, who then alerted the police.

Superintendent Motsokono said they managed to recover the girl’s body with the help of the police scuba divers.

The body, he said, was at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital awaiting post mortem.

Superintendent Motsokono said this was the second drowning incident near the dam this year as two fishermen also died there earlier.

The deceased was a standard seven pupil at Mandunyane Primary School. ENDS
