Rail Giants men’s softball team began its quest to secure the softball league championship with a thumping win in all their games.

Mahalapye based Rail Giants men and ladies teams showed great skill and determination, growing in confidence with every game and defeating their opponents, Scramblers, Comets and Raptures softball teams during the North zone softball league that was held in Selebi Phikwe this weekend.

Rail giants men started on a positive note by defeating the host Comets 4-2 in their first match while the ladies team also walloped Raptures of Serowe 19-2 in their opening game.

However, Rail Giants ladies team suffered a defeat in their last game against Francistown based Scramblers, trailing behind with five runs to Scramblers’ seven runs.

Rail Giants male and female teams capitalised on the loose ends and mistakes made by their counterparts and managed to dominate and win their games.

The team’s coach, Odirile Kegopotswe commended his players for the sterling performance they displayed in all their games, clinching the top spot of the softball log.

He encouraged the teams to maintain the standard and to attend training sessions without fail so that they could polish their skills.

“Our players remained united throughout their games. I encourage them to continue working hard until the end,” he said.

Botswana Softball Association youth development officer-North, Trevor Musa said the league would continue until March next year, where the top four teams from North and South would face off in the Top 8.

In the ladies category, he said three top teams from the North and five from the South would lock horns in the Top 8.

Musa said so far, the league was running smoothly without any hiccups and called on companies to consider sponsoring softball leagues in future. ENDS
