In response to allegations of corruption within the government, President Advocate Duma Boko assured the public that all individuals suspected of corrupt activities would be given the opportunity to defend themselves in a fair trial.

The President made these statements during a press briefing on Friday, following the announcement of the final appointments to his executive cabinet.

President Boko emphasised the commitment of his administration to uphold human rights, stating, ‘We must accord every person accused or suspected a fair trial. At the end of a fair trial, the guilt or innocence will be determined, and appropriate action will be taken,” he said.

He highlighted that the right to a fair trial was enshrined in the constitution and must be extended to all individuals.

Addressing the issue of corruption, the President vowed to close gaps that facilitate corrupt practices.

“We will revamp the Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime, enhancing its power and capabilities to investigate fairly and professionally,” he declared.

He assured that his government would take concrete steps to strengthen and empower this crucial institution for effective investigations and decisive actions.

Moreover, President Boko stressed the importance of adhering to due legal processes in determining guilt or innocence. He expressed a commitment to protecting whistleblowers and ensuring that thorough investigations into corruption allegations are conducted without bias.

“Human rights are indivisible and interdependent; therefore, we will treat all human rights equally, recognising their interconnected nature,” President Boko stated.

When questioned about political appointments within the public service, the President noted that actions concerning such appointments would be executed thoughtfully and at the appropriate time, ensuring no mistreatment of individuals.

He acknowledged a notable prevalence of politically aligned appointments in diplomatic positions, indicating that those appointed based on political affiliation outnumbered career diplomats.

President Boko reminded public officers that their primary responsibility was to uphold what was right, rather than merely seeking to please their leaders. He said his administration’s philosophy underscored the principle that integrity and accountability were paramount in public service. ENDS
