Botswana next host of regional World Childrens Day
17 Nov 2024
Botswana will host the 5th commemoration of the Regional World Children’s Day next year.
The development emanates from the passing over of the World Children’s Day Torch of Hope by President Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa to President Advocate Duma Boko and the National Children’s Consultative Forum chairperson, who is also children’s president for Botswana, Ms Aumake Aaron.
World Children’s Day is an annual event that is commemorated on November 20, to mark the anniversary of the United Nations’ General Assembly adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
It is a day for children where they get to express their opinions on issues that matter to them.
The day is also dedicated to promoting, advocating and celebrating children’s rights through dialogue and action that will build a better world for children.
Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe have been jointly celebrating the Regional World Children’s Day since 2021.
The event’s inaugural commemorations in the SADC region were held in Botswana in 2021, Zambia 2022 and Namibia 2023.
Now, Malawi, Mozambique and South Africa have joined in, bringing the number of SADC countries that jointly celebrate the day to seven so, this year’s regional commemoration hosted by Zimbabwe was the first comprising seven countries.
This year’s commemoration marked a significant milestone in Zimbabwe’s commitment to championing the rights and welfare of children not only within its borders but across SADC region and beyond. ENDS
