The stage is set for what is expected to be a thrilling encounter this Friday, as the senior national football team, the Zebras, squares off against the Lions of Chinguetti from Mauritania at the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown.
Botswana President, Advocate Duma Boko is expected to be in attendance for the crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match, which is a key step in the Zebras’ attempt to qualify for the finals to be hosted in Morocco.
This match promises to be a defining moment for the team and excitement is already reaching fever pitch in the host city, as the news spread like wildfire that the newly elected President is going to be at the game.
“This is not just an ordinary match. This is also a chance to witness the leader himself, a known football enthusiast. I cannot miss this (match),” exclaimed Moabi Mudongo, a die-hard Zebras fan from White City location in Francistown, with his voice filled with emotions.
“We Francistowners missed his inauguration last Friday, but we are not missing this one. I believe that everyone is going to throng the stadium, especially to see how a new President looks like, thereby boosting the morale of the players,” he added.
Former Francistown Regional Football Association chairperson, Fanyana Fisher said this AFCON qualifying clash is not just another game, but a pivotal moment for the Zebras, who find themselves just three points away from securing a place in the prestigious continental tournament.
Fisher predicts a 2-0 win against the visiting Lions of Chinguetti, adding that the Zebras have been gearing up for this encounter with intensity and determination.
“After a series of impressive performances, they now face a team that poses a formidable challenge but the win is ours,” he added.
He explained that with both teams eager to assert their dominance, fans can expect an electrifying atmosphere filled with passion and excitement.
“But for the Zebras, this match is a must-win. A victory would not only guarantee their spot in the AFCON tournament, but also serve as a significant boost to their confidence as they look to make their mark on the continental stage for the second time,” said Fisher.
He explained that the players understand the weight of this match, and they are prepared to leave everything on the field.
As the Zebras take to the field, all eyes will be on their star players.
The team’s captain Thatayaone ‘TT’ Ditlhokwe, known for his leadership and and defensive abilities, will be crucial in guiding his teammates through the high-pressure moments of the game.
Zebras’ interim head coach Morena Ramoreboli, said in an interview at a training session in Francistown on Tuesday that his boys are ready for this crucial encounter.
He said he was optimistic that the team would manage to collect the three points against Mauritania to qualify for the continental football showpiece.
Ramoreboli further indicated that what is impressing is that he would be playing the game without injuries and that the players are willing to give the country what it needs.
He said the team would also be encouraged by the presence of the President, who is scheduled to grace the match.
On the other side, the Lions of Chinguetti will aim to disrupt the Zebras’ plans.
Their tactical discipline and quick counter-attacks could pose a threat, making it essential for the Zebras’ defence to remain vigilant throughout the match.
The Zebras will have the backing of their passionate fans, who are expected to fill the stands and their unwavering support can often be the extra motivation the players need to elevate their performance in crucial matches.
This is a clash that no football enthusiast will want to miss. ENDS
