President to set tone for new government
06 Nov 2024
All eyes will be on the newly elected President Duma Boko as he sets the tone for his administration and the future direction of Botswana at his inauguration tomorrow at the National Stadium.
The ceremony will commence as early as 6am and is expected to be attended by dignitaries from the region, and senior government officials.
Mr Boko will be inaugurated as the 6th President, marking a significant milestone as he becomes the first leader to be elected from an opposition since the country gained independence in 1966. This transition reflects a pivotal moment in Botswana’s democratic journey.
A press release from the Office of the President describes the inauguration as a landmark event that underscores the advancement of democracy in Botswana.
Following the inauguration, President Boko will address the nation for the first time, outlining his vision and goals for Botswana’s future.
His leadership emerges from the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), a coalition formed in 2012 to consolidate the opposition and combat the challenge of vote-splitting that has historically benefited the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).
UDC comprises three political parties: the Botswana National Front (BNF), of which President Boko is also the party president; the Alliance for Progressives (AP), led by UDC deputy leader Mr Ndaba Gaolathe; and the Botswana Peoples Party (BPP), led by UDC Chairperson Mr Motlatsi Molapisi. Ends
