Crucial clash for The Mares today
27 Oct 2024
After Botswana senior women’s football team thrashed Mauritius 5-0 on Saturday in the HOLLYWOODBETS COSAFA Cup women’s championship in Gqeberha, South Africa, they now face Madagascar today.
Keitumetse Dithebe and Gaonyadiwe Ontlametse scored a goal each while Jessica Modise scored a hat-trick.
However, the group is still open after Malawi won 1-0 against Madagascar.
In their opening game Madagascar beat Mauritius 5-1 and are capable of spoiling the party for Botswana.
Coach Alex Malete in an interview with BOPA said he was happy with his players’ performance against Mauritius.
He said they did well, especially in the second half to control the game.
Malete said they were forced to score a lot of goals and that they changed their set up and sacrificed some players to score the goals.
He said they sacrificed Thanda Mokgabo and Laone Moloi to bring in a striker and an attacking midfielder.
The coach said they would also be forced to score more goals against Madagascar, but said the fact that they lost 1-0 to Malawi showed that they were strong. Malete said Madagascar only attacked with two players and that they preferred to seat deep and play long balls during transitions.
“So we need a lot of patience from the first minute to the last, and we also need to be clinical because we need more goals,” he said. The Mares have a goal difference of +5 while Malawi has +1 and the two sides have four points each. ENDS
