Advanced voting re-run successful

27 Oct 2024

The re-run of advanced voting held on Saturday in the Thamaga/Kumakwane, Tati East, and Kanye East constituencies has been hailed a success by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).

Mr Phatodi Nacane, the Principal Public Relations Officer of the IEC, reported that challenges encountered during the initial advanced voting phase necessitated the re-run, which unfolded smoothly across all participating constituencies. “All constituencies opened on time, and everything went well,” said Mr Nacane.

The re-run not only aimed to restore public trust in the electoral system but also highlighted the resilience of democratic institutions amid concerns of irregularities and public dissatisfaction with the first voting attempt.

Reports of a candidate allegedly snatching ballot papers in the Thamaga/Kumakwane constituency disrupted the initial voting process, leading to a suspension of activities. In Tati East, confusion arose from the omission of council candidates from the ballot.

Despite these hurdles, Mr Nacane expressed optimism, noting that Saturday’s voter turnout was ‘notably higher,’ prompting officials to extend working hours to ensure that everyone had the opportunity to cast their votes.

In Kanye East constituency, the voting process faced halts due to ballot paper mix-ups that could not be rectified in time.

Mr Nacane encouraged all eligible voters to make their voices heard on October 30, stating, ‘this is your opportunity to shape the government you want.’

The advanced voting is specifically designed for individuals who will be engaged on election day, allowing them to participate in the electoral process ahead of the official voting day. Ends
