VP underscores sustainable land management

Sustainable land management is vital for achieving various environmental, social and economic goals, Vice President Slumber Tsogwane has said.

 Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony of Ghanzi land servicing infrastructure and waste treatment plant recently,  Mr Tsogwane said it was crucial to adopt sustainable land practices such as provision of serviced land to improve livelihoods while reducing environmental degradation. 

He said the adopted land management system that allocated serviced land to citizens and residents would go a long way in enhancing service delivery as well as attracting investors to the township. 

In pursuit of implementation efficiency and citizen economic empowerment for Ghanzi District, he said there were two awarded projects. 

The two projects, will provide, serviced commercial and residential land, power supply, internal roads, water supply and distribution networks as well as waste water treatment plant and sanitation services. 

He noted that package one project comprised full land servicing of Block 1 to 6 financed at the tune of P644. 5 million. 

He said the project had been awarded to Ossy & Sons-Classic Clean Joint Venture and it was expected to yield 2 151 fully serviced plots, with 2 114 of them being for residential use while 23 would be allocated for civic and community use and 14 would be for industrial use. 

Mr Tsogwane mentioned that, the project commenced on September 24 and the contractors were at mobilisation stage with completion date set for September 2026. 

He said the scope of the work entailed construction of 36km roads of bituminous standards and associated drainage works, construction of 40km water reticulation, design and building of 43.8km of vacuum sewer system, designing and building of waste water treatment facility, construction of telecommunication civil works as well as designing and construction of electrical, mechanical telemetry works. 

In addition, he said the project would also service 1 986 existing plots of which 1860 were residential plots while 110 were industrial plots. There would also be provision of treated effluent to 16 horticultural plots, he said. 

Areas to be covered include  Morama, Khurakhura, Kgaphamadi South, Bosele and Meriting.  The Vice President said  package two involved full land servicing to already developed plots that was currently at 33 per cent having commenced in October 2023 and was scheduled to be completed in October 2025. 

He added that the project had so far employed 218 citizens. 

Mr Tsogwane further said the scope of the package two entailed construction of 41km of roads to bituminous standards and associated drainage works, construction of 55km of potable water reticulation, design and building of 55km of vacuum sewer system, design and construction of electrical mechanical and telemetry works as well as the construction of telecommunication civil works. 

He said the project had been awarded to Zhengtai-Land Mark Projects and Tau grading Joint venture, financed at a tune of P1,03 billion. 

“With these developments, Ghanzi will be a rocking township” he said. 

Mr Tsogwane also said the implementation of the two projects would employ about 400 people from Ghanzi and surrounding areas at their peak period. He implored the two contractors to honour their contractual obligations by delivering the projects on time, within budget and in compliance  with specific standards of quality. 

Ghanzi council chairperson, Mr Jeremiah Tibi, applauded government for ensuring that the projects were implemented, noting that the developments would improve the livelihoods of Ghanzi community. 

He also said the move would eradicate the plot allocation backlog that had been besieging the township from far back as from 2004. Ends
