Over 15 000 junior secondary school teachers and lecturers in technical and vocational education training colleges, colleges of education and Institutions of Health Sciences across the country will receive laptops in the second phase of the School Digitalisation programme.

Launching the second phase of the School Digitalisation Programme at Makhubu Junior Secondary School on Thursday, Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr Douglas Letsholathebe said after the successful delivery of more than 56 000 laptops in senior secondary schools in the first phase, the ministry had now moved further to the second phase.

“These laptops have transformed the education landscape for our teachers and students in senior secondary schools enabling innovative teaching methods and fostering a new era of learning,” he said.

In the second phase, he said a total of 15 410 laptops would be delivered to teachers and lecturers in 207 junior secondary schools, 40 Technical and Vocational Education and Training including brigades and technical colleges as well as four colleges of education and six Institutions of Health Sciences.

“By so doing, we are ensuring that the educators at this level also have access to the digital tools they need to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world. We really need to change the way we do things” he said.

Dr Letsholathebe further assured them that this gesture would also be extended to primary schools very soon, adding that this was not about laptops but unlocking potential and providing equal opportunities for every learner regardless of their background.

The government, he said was committed to the transformation of education and had every intention of ensuring that the teaching and learning environment was able to facilitate the delivery of 21st century learners.

“We want a 21st Century teacher for us to deliver a 21st century learner,” he said.

Dr Letsholathebe said this is also going to cut the budget for books, encouraging schools to use e-books over hard copies.

For his part, Acting Director Central Region Mr Otukile Kedikilwe said Selebi Phikwe had been an academic hub and led in the gesture towards transforming the economy from resource based to knowledge based.

The use of laptops, he said would inspire a lot of people and would bring in the culture of mindset change.

“Let us use this initiative to lead. Let us see the return on investment by bringing good academic results,” he said.

The Umbrella Parents Teachers Association chairperson for Selebi Phikwe, Mr Moses Moremi urged teachers to take care of the laptops and use them to access information and improve their knowledge.

He thanked government and stakeholders such as Ditec and Nativas for working together to successfully deliver on government’s initiative to produce the 21st century learner. Ends
