Sanitation scheme to enhance public environmental health

25 Oct 2024

The Kanye sanitation project will not only benefit households, but will also contribute to overall public health and environmental well-being, says Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Lemogang Kwape.

Commissioning the project in Kanye recently, he said it would enhance sanitation standards and address the growing demand for reliable water supply in the area.

Dr Kwape said the modern water treatment facility showed government’s commitment to excellence and sustainability.

He added that the successful implementation of the project had set a precedent for future projects in water and waste water treatment and the potential for eco-friendly solutions in water management.

He said the project was expected to be completed in 2019, but it had  encountered challenges that affected its completion such as excessive rock excavation which was not revealed by the geotechnical report.

He also noted the ban on mining of river sand, which affected materials needed for bedding and backfill.

Dr Kwape encouraged Kanye residents to apply for connections to the scheme in order to generate sufficient flow of waste water to the plant.

He said government had waived connection fees for 12 months to enable residents to connect to the scheme.

He urged them to utilise the project in order for the testing to commence.

Director of Technical Services in the Ministry of Lands and Water Affairs, Mr Kaboyamodimo Raitoko explained that the project included the construction of sewer reticulation across the village, pump stations, a waste water treatment plant and access roads to the treatment plant.

He also said the project did not meet the stipulated budget and time due to COVID-19 as well as the bottom rock that impacted the planned procurement.

He explained that the project would minimise the pollution of underground water and the environment. Ends
