The Mares hold COSAFA Cup champs

24 Oct 2024

Botswana senior national women’s team are expected to come out with guns blazing when they meet Mauritius on Saturday.

This is after holding the HOLLYWOODBETS COSAFA defending champions, Malawi to a 1-1 draw in a Group B clash in Gqeberha, South Africa, on Wednesday,

The Mares managed to salvage a point against the Scorchers of Malawi at Isaac Wolfson Stadium after the defending champions found the net through Faith Chinzimu before Laone Moloi restored parity.

Mauritius, on the other hand, suffered a 5-1 humiliation at the hands of Madagascar.

The Mares coach, Alex Malete said his players created many scoring opportunities but did not utilise them and conceded a silly goal from a corner kick.

He said they overloaded the midfield and created opportunities, but could not find the back of the net, but acknowledged that the Malawi girls were tough and did not allow them to play from the back, which made his players uncomfortable. He, however, said his players played as a unit.

Malete said against Mauritius, they would come up with a plan to score goals, adding that the group was likely to be decided by goals. “We need to work on our finishing in the final third and controlling and dominating the game,” he said.

Madagascar are at the summit of the group with three points followed by Botswana and Malawi respectively while Mauritius are at the bottom. Ends
