23 Oct 2024

The Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) led government continues to deliver on its promises, President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has said.

Speaking at the launch of Mogoditshane East’s parliamentary candidate, Ms Lillian Moremi and eight councillors on Saturday, Dr Masisi underlined the BDP’s ability to deliver on its promises by showcasing an electric car assembled locally, a result of the eMobility project, which he personally drove to the Mogoditshane launch.

He explained that the project, aimed to promote electric vehicles, brought with it a range of job-generating opportunities for Batswana.

Elaborating on the eMobility project, Dr Masisi assured the electorates that the value chain derived from the eMobility project would provide jobs not only in the car manufacturing industry but also in car sales, which would be reserved for citizens.

The President further disclosed that the company in charge of the car assembly was partly owned by the government, with the intent to sell some of its shares to individuals.

The BDP›s economic development plan, according to President Masisi, also included opening new mines such as the Kanye manganese mine which would produce batteries for electric cars and reopening of the Selibe Phikwe mine.

President Masisi further emphasized the BDP’s commitment to job creation and economic growth by stressing the potential for new industries to emerge in the wake of these new initiatives.Turning his focus to Mogoditshane community, President Masisi vowed to improve the condition of Mogoditshane by addressing urgent issues such as sanitation, crime, and cleanliness.

He announced several ambitious projects, including a P500 million clinic, and a P62 million Rural Administration Centre (RAC) offices to be implemented in Mogoditshane.

“The BDP government is committed to transforming Mogoditshane and enhancing the quality of life for its residents,” President Masisi said.

While promising development for the community, President Masisi also cautioned against the false promises made by opposition parties, particularly the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) and the Botswana Congress Party (BCP), regarding the living wage and pension increases.

“The opposition parties’ proposals to increase the living wage to P4,000 and the old age pension to P1,500 and P1,800 are not feasible,” he said. «These proposals would only lead to an unsustainable increase in the country’s deficit,” he emphasized.

DR Masisi further highlighted government’s commitment to social welfare, explaining that while they aimed to increase social security grants, they wanted to do so in a manner that would not compromise the stability of the economy.

Mr Tumiso Rakgare, the MP candidate for Mogoditshane West, commended Ms Moremi, the newly announced parliamentary candidate for Mogoditshane East, for her acumen and strong ties to the community.

“She is a respectful and capable young lady who knows the constituency well.

I am confident that she will build on the work I started and continue to make a positive impact on our community,” he said.Elaborating on the promising relationship between the two constituencies, Mr Rakgare disclosed that he and Ms Moremi had established a trust that they would utilize to fund projects not covered by government funding.

Ms Moremi embraced the opportunity to represent Mogoditshane East constituency, and expressed her gratitude and pledged to work in unison with her team of councillors to address the needs and concerns of their constituents. ENDS
