Botswana’s sprint sensation, Letsile Tebogo is leading in the World Athletics male track athlete of the year competition.
After the nominees were released on Monday, Tebogo was way ahead on votes in all social media platforms and closing day for voting is Sunday.
He will compete against US’s Noah Lyles, 110 metres hurdler, Grant Holloway, 400 metres hurdler, Rai Benjamin and 800 metres Kenyan runner, Emmanuel Wanyonyi as well as Norwegian middle and long distance runner, Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
World Athletics said nominees for each of the three main award categories will be compiled by a panel of international experts.
It said voting will then take place to determine the two finalists in each category, and that the World Athletics Council’s vote will count for 50 per cent of the results while the World Athletics Family’s vote and social media votes will each count for 25 per cent of the result.
Both the World Athletics Council and World Athletics Family will cast their votes by email while the social media vote will be open on Facebook, Instagram and X.
Once the finalists have been established, a fan vote will open for all registered users of Inside Track to determine the overall World Athlete of the Year.
Botswana Athletics Association vice president, Kenneth Kikwe says Tebogo’s nomination makes the country proud, describing the Olympic gold medal winner as an ambassador for the country
Kikwe also said Tebogo was a clean athlete who took the issue of doping seriously. Ends
