Meteorological Services warns of imminent heat wave
23 Oct 2024
The Department of Meteorological Services has warned the public about hot to extremely hot conditions expected to prevail over most parts of the country throughout the week and into the weekend.
A press release issued by the department on Wednesday says the extremely hot conditions are caused by the inflow of hot air from the tropics influenced by a dominant surface trough across the country.
The release says maximum temperatures are expected to range between 36 to 40 degree Celsius starting on Tuesday and will last until Saturday.
It also says the northern regions of Ngamiland, Chobe and northern-central districts are likely to reach the heights of 38 and 40 degree Celsius.
The release advises the public to mitigate the extremely hot conditions by drinking plenty of water or hydrating fluids while avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and seeking shade where possible.
The release says the public is cautioned to wear wide-brimmed hats or to carry an umbrella for protection.
It also warned the public to limit participation in outdoor activities and to rest and keep well hydrated after participating in such activities.
The release also says the department will continue to monitor the increase in temperatures and will provide updates as necessary. Ends
