Botswana eMobility dream becomes reality

22 Oct 2024

Following the hand over of the electric vehicle (EVs) recently, Vice President Slumber Tsogwane had an opportunity to drive the eMobility vehicle in Orapa yesterday.

Mr Tsogwane said Botswana planned to assemble 50 electric vehicles and 30 buses.

Mr Tsogwane said Botswana had been working with companies in Europe and China to train and capacitate some of the locals.

He said the companies setup an assembling company in China upon completion of their training, and later on came to set up in Botswana.

“What is important is that this will create value chains such as production of batteries, even mining companies will produce materials used for production of batteries,” he said. The next stage, he said, would be to establish a manufacturing plant for electric vehicles in Botswana."

Mr Tsogwane hailed the eMobility vehicle for being user-friendly, not needing any water or fuel to operate.

He added that what was required was for a driver to carry a charger only.

EVs have the potential to attract more investors to develop the local eMobility industry and they are also hailed for reducing green house emissions. Ends
