Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) members have been urged to remain united and support one another as the party gears up for the upcoming general elections set for October 30.
The call for unity came from BDP veteran Mr Daniel Kwelagobe during a veterans’ engagement meeting themed: Morero le Bagolo go Boela Marakanelong a Ditsela, organised by the North West regional committee in Maun on Thursday.
Mr Kwelagobe emphasised the importance of national unity and true democracy, which he described as the foundation upon which the BDP was built.
He urged party members to honor the legacy established by the veterans by setting aside personal and internal differences.
“Failure to work as a united force,” he cautioned, “would give the opposition a chance to win some of the constituencies.”
Reflecting on the party’s history, Mr Kwelagobe paid tribute to the late former president, Sir Seretse Khama, for instilling the value of unity, which he believed was crucial for the party’s historical success.
“I plead with fellow democrats to unite, maintain peace, and protect the good reputation of the party,” he said.
While acknowledging that the recent primary elections faced irregularities, Mr Kwelagobe encouraged members to focus on correcting those mistakes and rallying support for the candidates who emerged victorious. He stressed that, despite the party’s large following, not every member could contest in the general elections.
He also reminded attendees of the importance of adhering to the party constitution, which he described as the cornerstone of their political system. Mr Kwelagobe urged branch committees to collaborate closely with veterans, highlighting their potential contributions to the BDP and the nation.
“As party elders and veterans, we are a source of knowledge and wisdom, and we can help with guidance and direction,” he stated, expressing gratitude to the party’s leadership for recognising the role of veterans in shaping the future.
The North West BDP Regional Chairperson, Mr Judge Sango, echoed the need for collaboration, emphasising the importance of maintaining peace and stability as the elections approach.
“Our party is well known for good governance and best practices,” he noted, calling for concerted efforts to rectify past mistakes within the region.
Mr Sango set an ambitious target for the BDP to win all seven constituencies under their leadership, asserting that unity would be critical to achieving this goal.
He also acknowledged the significant contributions of both veterans and party leadership, expressing confidence that they were steering the country in the right direction. Ends
