The annual pilgrimage to Patayamatebele in the North East district by the Catholic Diocese of Francistown has the potential to grow spiritual tourism as yet another engine of growth, says Father Gabriel Gaiye.

Father Gaiye echoed these words on Saturday during the church’s sixth pilgrimage at Patayamatebele, formerly Old Tati.

He also said the event facilitated developments in the village and helped grow strong bonds of friendship between the people of Patayamatebele and the church.

“Our annual visits have financial benefits to some people of Patayamatebele who we engage to provide security for vehicles as well as the erection of the tents for the entire duration of our stay here,” he said, adding that residents of the small village of Patayamatebele also stand to benefit tremendously spiritually.

Arch Bishop Frank Nubuasah of the Gaborone diocese used the Saturday mass to pay homage to the fallen Francistown diocese’s Bishop Anthony Rebello.

The late Bishop died after he collapsed during Mass on May 4 this year, aged 74.

He spoke of the departed bishop’s selflessness and devotion to the Gospel throughout his life.

“I encourage everyone here to follow his example and lead sacrificial lives for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” he said. Arch Bishop Nubuasah also led the congregation in praying for peaceful elections during the October 30 polls and for rain, to end the long-drawn-out dry spell.

Diocesan Pilgrimage Committee member Mr Bernard Motswere expressed concern that the pilgrimage was gradually losing momentum. ENDS
