An efficient public transport is crucial for fostering economic growth, as it connects people to job opportunities and essential services.

Officially opening the new P65-million Selebi Phikwe bus and taxi rank recently, Assistant Minister of Trade and Industry, Ms Beauty Manake said the construction of the rank showed government’s commitment to improving public transport services across the country.

She said the facility , which was a collaboration between Selebi Phikwe Town Council and  Nickel Head company, was a modern hub for commuters and would facilitate easier access to transportation services for all residents and visitors.

She said the new facility would not only streamline transportation in Selebi Phikwe, but would also create opportunities for local businesses providing a central point for taxis and buses.

“The expectation is to see an increase in foot traffic that will benefit local vendors and service providers, moreover it will enhance commuters’ overall safety and convenience, ensuring that they have access to reliable transport options,” she said.

Ms Manake further explained that an essential aspect of the project was the inclusion of market and vending stalls that would provide small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) with a platform to thrive.

“The stalls represent an opportunity for local entrepreneurs to showcase their goods and services, contributing to the economic landscape of Selebi Phikwe,” she said, adding that it would not just empower individuals, but also foster innovation and job creation within communities.

The assistant minister said the project created 100 job opportunities which was aligned with Vision 2036 and the National Transformation Strategy (NTS).

She thanked Nickel Head company for its partnership with SPTC in the development and enhancement of Selebi Phikwe.

For his part, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Mpho Morapedi said the new bus rank had 46 market and 30 vending stalls which would create opportunities for entrepreneurs.

“With over 70 stalls in total they are setting the stage for Selebi Phikwe residents, particularly those in the informal sector to have access to new markets,” he said. Mr Morapedi added that the informal sector played a pivotal role in the economy by providing goods and services that met the everyday needs of citizens.

He said many small-scale businesses operated with limited infrastructure, but that the narrative would change.

He revealed that the market stalls would be leased for a one-year period with Nickel Head and subject to renewal. Ends
