Govt prioritises basic services

13 Oct 2024

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has emphasised the government’s ongoing efforts to enhance provision of basic services through infrastructure development

Speaking at the official handing over of a clinic to Borotsi community on Friday, Dr Masisi  highlighted the importance of making healthcare accessible, particularly in rural areas.

He therefore  lauded Mr Nadim Bobat of Iqraa Agencies and Investment for his dedication in fulfilling a promise to construct a clinic for the residents.

The new clinic, the President said would provide residents with daily access to essential health services, eliminating the need to rely on a mobile clinic and reducing the long journeys to Sefhare for medical assistance.

Although the construction of the clinic faced delays, President Masisi expressed his satisfaction with its completion.

Describing Mr Bobat as a thoughtful individual, President Masisi noted that he had previously built another clinic in the Boteti area.

He stated that the construction of the Borotsi clinic relieved the government of certain financial burdens, allowing it to focus on staffing and equipping the facility.

The President urged residents to take full advantage of the new health services while ensuring the clinic was well-maintained, as healthcare resources were often expensive.

He also acknowledged the contributions of former Botswana ambassador to Australia, Ms Dorcas Makgato, for her relentless advocacy for a hospital in the region, which paved the way for discussions about the clinic.

In his remarks, Mr Bobat expressed that the clinic represented more than just a donation; it was an investment in the future and wellness of Borotsi residents, contributing to the nation’s development.

He underscored the notion that a healthy community was the foundation of a prosperous nation, noting that health was vital for any thriving society.

“This is more than just a building; it is a symbol of what can be achieved when we all work together as businesses, individuals, and communities with a shared goal of progress,” Mr Bobat stated.

He said the clinic would act as a lifeline for many families and improve the quality of life for everyone in the village.

Further, Mr Bobat reiterated that the clinic embodied the type of social welfare that should underpin community development, emphasising that true progress extended beyond economic growth.

“It is about creating an environment where everyone, regardless of their status, has access to basic needs such as healthcare, education, and proper infrastructure,” he said.

He said initiatives, like building clinics ensured that the most vulnerable members of society were not overlooked, providing them with opportunities for healthy, productive lives.

Mr Bobat hoped that the donation would inspire other businesses to similarly contibute to community welfare.

Minister of Health, Mr Setlhomo Lelatisitswe said when Mr Bobat announced that he would build a clinic at Borotsi, government decided to build houses for the clinic staff, but the contractor failed to honour the agreement.

He said a new contractor would build the four houses by the end of next month.

Mr Lelatisitswe also said the aim of his ministry was to abolish health posts countrywide and turn them into clinics.

He thanked Mr Bobat for the donation and said it would make a big difference to the residents of Borotsi. Ends
