The 2024 HOLLYWOODbets COSAFA women’s championship draw has placed the senior women football national team, The Mares in Group C.

They are in the same group with the defending champions, Malawi, Madagascar and Mauritius. The championship will be held in Gqeberha, South Africa, from 22 October to 2 November and 14 teams will be competing in this year’s edition.

The teams head coach, Alex Malete said they welcomed the draw and that the championship came at the right time as they were preparing for WAFCON which would be staged next year.

He said they would work on how they wanted to play at WAFCON and that they had set goals, adding that the players also and understood the assignment. “We share the goal that prior to WAFCON, we need to do well,” he said.

He said the tournament would give them the opportunity to tick the boxes, noting that their goal was to compete and leave an impression.

He also noted that the last they did well was in 2020 when they won a silver medal. He said last year they managed to get out off the group stages, and that they wanted to improve. “We want to go all the way to the final, and as one of the three COSAFA nations that have qualified for WAFCON, it will say much about us if we win and prove that we didn’t qualify by fluke,” he said.

He said they were waiting for the draw to be conducted so that could be specific in their preparation, noting that they previously played a 1-1 draw against Malawi.

He also said Malawi were consistent in their team selection. Ends
