Rollers GU clash

03 Oct 2024

Will it be a damp squib or epic extravaganza? Only time will tell.

After protracted delay and postponements, the FNB Premiership will finally take-off this weekend.

Botswana Football League (BFL) chief, Bennett Mamelodi and his team have a mammoth task to convince sponsors and football supporters that this will be a season to watch.

The premiership is scheduled to commence at the National Stadium tonight at 7pm with a mouth-watering clash between Gaborone rivals; Township Rollers and Gaborone United (GU).

Gaborone derby often brings the country to a stand-still as a lot is always at stake.

Each team always brings out its best and fights hard to claim bragging rights. Both sides have bolstered their squads, therefore the match promises to be a titanic encounter.

Last season, GU beat Township Rollers 2-0 in the first round, however, Rollers registered a 2-1 victory in the second round.

Speaking during a press conference yesterday, Moyagoleele coach Pontsho Moloi said his charges were ready for the challenge.

The technical team, Moloi said, has done all it could to prepare for this taxing game as well as for the entire season.

However, he admitted that the derby was always a game of high pressure and motivation on its own.

For his part, Popa Popa coach, Mogomotsi Mpote said they were prepared to face GU.

He said they had been playing quality friendly games, but he said they registered some injured players, amongst them, Mogakolodi ‘Tsotso’ Ngele. In other Friday fixtures: Orapa United will host Chadibe at Itekeng Stadium at 6 pm., while on Saturday BDF XI and Matebele will lock horns at Botswana Public Service College Stadium.

Mochudi Centre Chiefs will travel to Palapye to have a date with Morupule Wanderers.

Tafic and Nico United will be at Francistown council stadium, Extension Gunners will host Sua Flamingoes at Lobatse Sports Complex while Jwaneng Galaxy will be VTM guest at VTM Arena.

On Sunday Security Systems and Union Flamengo Santos will meet in Lobatse. All weekend games kick-off at 3:30 p.m. Ends
