Golden Arrows emerged champions of Letlhakeng Independence Tournament by defeating Blue Birds 4-2 in a thrilling penalty shootout during the finals.

The triumphant Golden Arrows claimed the championship prize  money of P6 500, a coveted trophy, and prestigious gold medals.

Blue Birds came second and walked away P3 500 richer while the bronze position was secured by Mokwele Young Strikers and received P1 600.

Tshakhuama claimed the fourth position, also pocketing P1 600.

Teams ranking from fifth to eighth position were awarded P700 each, with those in positions ninth to 16^th receiving P300 each.

Letlhakeng Independence Tournament, which spanned four days, was a self-funded event relying solely on proceeds from gate takings.

Letlhakeng Sports Committee chairperson, Therisanyo Kasemang told BOPA that the tournament made P30 650 in gate takings, a portion of which was used as prize money while the remainder was utilised for logistical arrangements, including referee payments, match officials’ fees, and security services provision.

He expressed regret over the under-17 teams’ failure to meet the registration deadline, emphasising that the primary objective of the tournament was to nurture football at grassroots level.

Also, he highlighted that the tournament’s role was to steer youth away from criminal activities during the Independence holiday, by engaging them in sport.

Kasemang underscored the positive impact of the tournament on local small businesses and its role in fostering community unity in Letlhakeng.

He outlined plans for a future district tournament and said the aim was to expand the event by incorporating additional sporting codes, such as women’ soccer and further said collaborating with local schools to encourage students to appreciate the importance of sports. 

Kasemang urged the community to consider sponsoring the tournament and said that securing sponsorships would not only enhance playing facilities and prize money. Ends
