Motorbike race can diversify tourism

01 Oct 2024

Potential sponsors have been implored to support the annual Nhabe off-road championship aimed to promote sport tourism as well as develop and nurture star riders who could compete in the international arena.

One of the sport administrators in Maun, Ralph Ledimo appealed to potential sponsors in an interview on the sidelines of the event explaining that the initiative was a brilliant idea and had the potential to contribute to the tourism industry.

He said lack of sponsors for such spectacular event was a serious concern and wished potential sponsors could come on board and appreciate the magnitude of the event and the benefits attached to it.

“This motorsport event is gradually growing as compared to previous years in terms of the number of riders and spectators and I believe if the organisers can secure a sponsorship, the event can be bigger and better.”

Ledimo who is also the chairperson of Maun Track and Field Club and Sports Volunteer Movement also expressed concern that some motorbike clubs across the country could not make it to the event as a result of lack of sponsors.

He said the annual motor biking event could diversify sport tourism activities in the tourism hub apart from horse racing and athletics among others.

Ledimo emphasised on early promotion of the event calling on the organisers to enhance their marketing strategy to attract more attention.

While he appreciated that this year, there was a motorcade prior to the event, he was of the view that organisers could do more, engage other sport persons to build momentum and to sensitize the community about the event.

Meanwhile, organised by Maun team in collaboration with Orapa team, the event attracted over 40 motor bikers with a combination of professionals and amateur riders competing in various races.

Lion Pretorius of Kalahari X CR was crowned the overall winner in the junior category. Other overall champions in other categories included Aiden Webber and the sensational rider Kosmas Mamaloukos both from RD Motorsport as well as Kgosi Tsogang of Desert Rats among other.  Ends
