School encourages knowledge on culture

Boteti House Primary School commemorated Botswana’s 58th Independence Day by displaying Setswana culture and traditional customs as a way of encouraging the pupils to embrace culture.
The school head, Ms Olerile Mokotedi said it was important for pupils to know the origins of Botswana, adding that the main objective of the event was to ensure that learners were knowledgeable on cultural issues.
The school, she said, prepared a variety of Setswana cuisine so that pupils could have a taste.
The pupils also learnt about Setswana marriage negotiations through a play.
For his part, Kgosi Ryner Makosha of Orapa explained that in marriage negotiations setup, there were customs practiced such as Thotse, which he said was a private practice.
One of the pupils, Sahilia Mabetha said she learnt that marriage negotiations were led and conducted by uncles.
Ms Sahilia learnt from the event that it was critical to preserve culture. ENDS
