Motorbike race can diversify tourism

29 Sep 2024

Ralph Ledimo, a sport administrator in Maun and chairperson of the Maun Track and Field Club and Sports Volunteer Movement, has urged potential sponsors to support the annual Nhabe Off-Road Championship.

The event aims to promote sport tourism while developing and nurturing star riders capable of competing on the international stage.

Every year during the Independence Holidays, bike and quad riders from across the country gather in Maun to participate in the championship and enjoy what the region has to offer.

In an interview on the sidelines of the event, Ledimo expressed that the initiative had the potential to contribute to the tourism industry. However, he raised concerns about the lack of sponsorship for the spectacular event.

“This motorsport event is gradually growing compared to previous years in terms of the number of riders and spectators. I believe that if the organisers could secure sponsorship, the event could become bigger and even better,” he stated.

Ledimo highlighted the synergy between motorsports and local business, stating, ‘the roar of engines and the camaraderie of riders are more than just a spectacle; they are a potent tool for business. This event can create memorable experiences that resonate well beyond the championship itself.” He appealed to the business community to recognise the benefits of investing in sports.

He also pointed out that some motorbike clubs could not make it to Maun due to a lack of sponsors. With the public holiday drawing in travelers, Ledimo expressed disappointment that these opportunities were missed.

“Maun is an area rich in sporting talent and performance,” he noted. “The annual motorbiking event could diversify the sport tourism activities in the area, alongside horse racing and athletics.”

Historically, the district has produced talented local athletes who have excelled in elite competitions, both nationally and internationally, proudly elevating the country’s profile in the sporting world.

Ledimo also emphasised on early promotion of the event calling on the organisers to enhance their marketing strategy to attract more attention. Organisers, he said should intensify the build up to the big day with activations aimed at building up interests and excitement amongst the communities.

While he appreciated that this year, there was a motorcade prior to the event, he was of the view that Maun team organisers could do more, engage other sport persons to build momentum and to sensitise the community about the event.

Meanwhile, the event attracted over 40 motor bikers with a mix of professionals and amateur riders competing in various races.

Lion Pretorius of Kalahari X CR was crowned the overall winner in the junior category and other overall champions in other categories included Aiden Webber and the sensational rider Kosmas Mamaloukos both from RD Motorsport as well as Kgosi Tsogang of Desert Rats among others. ENDS
