The 12th District Number 5 Community Policing Cluster Awards held on Tuesday in Maun acknowledged dikgosi as relevant stakeholders in fighting crime.

Paramount Chief of Batawana, Kgosi Tawana II stated that clusters were chaired by dikgosi who together with their regiments, worked hand in hand with the community to curb crime for a safer Botswana.

He said crime recognised no borders and reminded the audience of the primary goal to have crime free communities and a safe and secure nation by 2036.

In order to attract foreign investors into the communities, he said they must be aware that crime was a repellent to investors especially the North West District where most visitors were attracted by flora and fauna.

Kgosi Tawana said Maun was among the top performing clusters in previous years.

He called on every cluster chairperson and officer to involve their communities in efforts to fight crime. He said the awards served as a recognition and appreciation of their sacrifice and patriotism.

Kgosi Tawana pledged his support and called on dikgosi to do more so that the nation realised National Vision 2036, pillar four of Governance, Peace and Security. He decried the high rate of Gender Based Violence (GBV), and noted that more still needed to be done on that front.

“Women and children are the most affected. Many have died at the hands of men, and I ask all the leaders to be engaged in finding ways to reduce domestic violence,” Kgosi Tawana added.

No. 5 District chairperson for community policing, Kgosi Johanne Ngwengera said community policing initiative had proved to be an effective tool to fight crime.

He encouraged clusters to do more by involving communities to play a role. ENDS
