DWNP launches Keeping Game in Masimo initiative
26 Sep 2024
To promote citizen ownership of wildlife and foster sustainable use, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks has launched the Keeping Game in Masimo programme.
This initiative is designed to contribute to economic growth and employment creation within local communities. Seventy-nine applications for this programme have been received in Serowe District.
Mr Benard Kenosi, the deputy chairman of the Serowe District Council, said on Monday that of these, 14 applications – nine for men and five for women -- were approved, and the applicants had received wild animals.
He regretted many applications were not approved because they did not comply with the fencing specifications.
Addressing the full council meeting, Mr Kenosi said applicants were advised to raise their fence height to meet the necessary standards. Once these specifications were met, permits would be issued, allowing farmers to keep wild animals and purchase from existing game farms.
“We have noted some challenges, including transportation-related stress and injuries leading to mortality and animals escaping upon release,” he said. “To address these issues, farmers are encouraged to construct holding bomas for adaptation and to monitor animal well-being closely.”
Mr Kenosi said game farmers should consider increasing their stock by buying from licensed ranches.
He pointed out that the programme offers a significant opportunity for many Batswana to engage in tourism and game farming businesses.
He said government was committed to educating more citizens about the benefits of the programme through kgotla meetings and community events. ENDs
