Molao calls for vigilance on roads

17 Sep 2024

Various church denominations from Borolong and Chadibe gathered along the A30 highway to pray against fatal road accidents.

The prayers were held at a recent accident site in which five people perished on the spot when a mini bus they were travelling in overturned, leaving a gaping wound in the hearts of the residents of the two villages.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Agriculture also former MP for Shashe West, Mr Fidelis Molao spoke of the need for community action to curb accidents.

Mr Molao thanked various churches for their endeavour to pray for accident free roads, saying the month of September had been dedicated to various activities that include praying for HIV/AIDS, drug abuse as well as road accidents.

Mr Molao explained that prayer was powerful, but so was responsible behaviour.

“We must be vigilant, drive carefully and share this message with our loved ones,” said Mr Molao, adding that the road should be a path to joy, not to sorrow.

He said motorists often blamed poor road conditions, eventhough, in many cases, the drivers were at fault.

Mr Molao appealed to Batswana not to graze livestock along the road, because these animals were also a major causes of road accidents.

He said while it was understandable for farmers to have moved their livestock nearer to Francistown for better pastures, they should also look after the animals so not to cause accidents.

Mr Molao also advised passengers not to hesitate to reprimand drivers who drove carelessly, saying it was their responsibility to do so.

Speaking at the event, Pastor Lovemore Moroka of Faith Gospel Apostolic Church in Borolong said most of the accidents were not due to human error, but recklessness of drivers.

In his welcome remarks, Kgosi Mmoloki Kajata of Borolong thanked the congregation from the village to have seen it fit to converge on the accident site to pray for forgives from God.

He lamented that each and every year there was a fatal road accident between Orapa T-junction and Borolong along the A30 highway.

“This is a serious concern and it is a wake-up call for every motorist because many lives are lost through road accidents,” he added. Ends
