Race for Cancer challenge back this Sunday
12 Sep 2024
After a five year hiatus, the Race for Cancer road cycling challenge by Chainring will be back this Sunday at Airport Junction.
The last race was held in April 2019 and the event could not be staged the following years due to COVID 19.
“We lost some of our sponsors who were adversely affected by the pandemic, hence the lapse,” said the organiser Leutlwetse Kgosidialwa.
Race for Cancer challenge is a cycling event meant to educate the public about various types of cancers and how they can seek help. Some of the common cancers in Botswana are breast cancer and childhood cancers among others. However, Kgosidialwa said the role of cyclists in this awareness of cancer was to carry forward messages of early testing.
He said the objectives of the race also speak to creating awareness and the importance of testing early which helps in its effective treatment. Also the race is used to show sympathy to the affected; patients, survivors and caregivers.
The race challenge is in four distance of 120km, 90km, 60km, 30km with categories of elite, under23, junior, youths, vets, masters and corporate. Registration for the challenge is ongoing at www.ticketlinc.co.bw with 120km and 90km for P250 and 60km and 30km for P200, while corporate with a team of six registered with P1,200. In 2019 Chainring, a team of cyclists from different cycling clubs, organized a 1000 kilometre race from Maun to Gaborone for cancer awareness.
