Brigadier George Chitsva of Zimbabwe National Defence Force (ZNDF) has asserted that Botswana played a vital role, though often overlooked, in the liberation of Zimbabwe from colonial rule.

Speaking at a gala dinner at the end of a two-day bilateral military games between the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) and the Zimbabwe National Defence force (ZNDF) in Francistown on Sunday, Brigadier Chitsva, acknowledged the bravery of Batswana who offered refuge to Zimbabweans during their fight for independence.

He highlighted the risks taken by Batswana who provided sanctuary to Zimbabweans during the liberation struggle. Brigadier Chitsva expressed gratitude for the generosity of Batswana who sheltered them during the war for independence. Brigadier Chitsva, who also extended his invitation to Brigadier Kagiso Kgaswanyane for next year’s similar games in Bulawayo, hoped that this cordial relationship would last for many years.

Meanwhile, Commander 2 Brigade Group, Brigadier Kgaswanyane expressed gratitude at the level of discipline demonstrated during the games. “Discipline is not just a concept, it is woven into the very fabric of our military code of conduct,” declared Brigadier Kgaswanyane.

He said the games had not only showcased exceptional skills and prowess but also shed light on the paramount importance of discipline within the armed forces.

Brigadier Kgaswanyane commended the participants for exemplifying the pinnacle of military decorum throughout the challenging competitions.

He observed that a spirit of camaraderie had defined the games, underscoring the significance of discipline as a guiding principle.

“Our soldiers have not only displayed their physical prowess and tactical acumen but have also demonstrated a high level of discipline that is truly commendable,” he remarked.

Brigadier Kgaswanyane also indicated that sport provides a place for learning and growth and that the games provided such platform. He said the games were successful as different teams demonstrated good skills and sportsmanship. He said the main aim was not winning but to forge the spirit of togetherness, socialisation and making lasting friendships. ENDS
