Kgosi urges churches to fight societal ills

05 Sep 2024

Faith-based organisations have been implored to continue praying for an end to societal ills and also help stop all the harmful beliefs and practices which promote them.

Senior chief’s representative, Kgosi Oleyo Ledimo, made the remarks when welcoming masses who thronged the bogosi yard to stand united in prayer for challenges faced by the country.

He said alcohol and substance abuse, gender based violence, among others, were on the rise and needed undivided attention and called on Christians to stand united with members of the community to pray without ceasing to end the ills.

He observed that the church was regarded as a powerful organ that could promote good health amongst its members and the community at large.

“During perilous times, we should all turn to prayer as a means of seeking a spiritual solution to challenges faced by our society because we believe that God hears us and intervenes to ensure peace and stability,” Kgosi Ledimo said.

He spoke against the tendency by some churches to fuel social ills saying that was an offence against God. He said churches should be seen to be leading by example in preaching the gospel that brings a positive change to the society.

Vice chairperson of the Maun Ministers Fraternal, Dr George Banda, said it was time as individuals, churches and organisations to reflect and take charge in unity in the same cause of addressing HIV/AIDS and social ills such as gender based violence, drug abuse, non-communicable diseases, road accidents as well as all the ills in the community.

Dr Banda appreciated the government’s  continued support of the Christian community and its effort for involving Batswana in the fight against HIV/AIDS and other challenges, noting that it was possible to live in a society free of gender based violence and all other attacks.

He said it was disheartening to learn of reports of people murdering their neighbours and beloved ones.

“We should pray for our neighbours and our families and as pastors we believe that we can be a transformed nation,” he said. Ends
