Chobe Land Board takes lead in plot allocation target
04 Sep 2024
Chobe Land Board is leading in plot allocation throughout the country and has surpassed its target by over 200 per cent.
Addressing a full sitting of the Chobe District Council recently, council chairperson, Mr Chimney Mululwani commended the land board for carrying out the exercise efficiently with no additional funds required.
Mr Mululwani noted that the land board had set a target of 4 000 residential plot allocations for the 2023/24 financial year, and that they allocated 3 863 which constituted 97 per cent.
He said the remaining 137 plots would be allocated by the end this month, adding that an additional 3 000 residential plots that were the target for the 2024/25 financial year would be allocated between October and March 2025.
However, he pointyed out that due to unavailability of land in Lesoma, the land board was unable to allocate plots in the village and that the waiting list stood at over 6 000.
He added that the land board was hopeful that some land from the forest reserve would be de-gazetted for the expansion of Lesoma.
Mr Mululwani said the land authority was facing challenges in plot allocations in Pandamatenga and Mabele due to land shortage and that the waiting list was over 2 000 and over 500 respectively. He, however, said the land board had identified 80 hectares and 50 hectares for the expansion of Mabele and Pandamatenga respectively.
He noted that villages such as Kachikau, Kavimba and Satau had 700, 600 and 400 plots without takers respectively, and urged residents to submit applications for allocation in the villages.
On other issues, he said Chobe Land Board started conveyancing for Secure Land Titles (SLTs) at the Deeds Registry in 2022, but that only 2 225 SLTs had been registered as at August 2024.
He encouraged residents to collect their documents, noting that only 1 034 had been collected and that it was 46 per cent. Ends
