General elections set for October 30

His Excellency President Dr Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi has, in accordance with Section 90(3) of the Constitution announced October 30 as the date for 2024 general elections.

In light of this, President Masisi also said the 12th Parliament will be dissolved September 5 also in accordance with the Constitution’s, Section 90(3) that stipulates that general elections must occur within 60 days, following dissolution of Parliament.

In a public statement, President Masisi said he would issue a writ of elections instructing that elections be held in all 61 constituencies across the country.

Furthermore, he said nomination of presidential candidates was scheduled for September 28 at Gaborone High Court in line with Section 4 of the Presidential Elections Supplementary Provisions Act.

He said nominations for parliamentary and council candidates would occur on October 4 as stipulated by Section 34 (2) of the Electoral Act.

To promote high voter turnout, President announced that October 30 and 31 would be public holidays and urged Batswana to vote in numbers.

“Let us unite in demonstrating our steadfast commitment to democracy, peace and development, values that are intertwined and fundamental to our nation,” he said. Ends
