Project MABU on Monday handed over hampers to disadvantaged mothers at Sekgoma Memorial Hospital in Serowe on Monday.
The hampers included clothes, toys, grocery, blankets and pads.
The leader of Project MABU who is also Woolworths Country Manager, Ms Gorata Abotseng Lekau, said MABU was an initiative by the South African High Commissioner to Botswana, Ms Thaninga Shope-Soumah.
“This is an annual initiative that celebrates newborn babies born on the first day of the year. Ideally as industries we prefer to do these hand overs before the end of April every year’’, she said.
Ms Lekau said the initiative was strongly rooted in the understanding that it takes a village to raise a child.
It is made up of sponsors who have generously donated not only to newborn babies but the household in which the baby is born into, she said.
She stated that the Project MABU was initiated in 2021 and the first handover was done in 2022.
Ms Lekau indicated that the project was cast countrywide and the geographical spread was guided by the Ministry of Health demarcations of the country.
She mentioned that the beneficiaries were identified through District Health Management Teams including identifying their needs.
Ms Lekau said most of the beneficiaries were out of school youth who were unemployed.
Beneficiaries thanked Project MABU team for the good gesture. ends
